We try to answer questions daily. Questions are not posted until they are answered.

Here are answers to the commonly asked questions about where to resell Painted Ponies, and what their current value is:

When collectors choose to resell their Painted Ponies, we recommend doing so on eBay. There is also a Facebook group, which was set up by Painted Ponies collectors and is not monitored by The Trail of Painted Corporate Office, where you can offer your Painted Ponies for sale. Here is a link to that Facebook group:

To find the current perceived value of your Painted Ponies, we suggest searching on eBay for the same figurine with a similar edition number. If you have an eBay account, you can look up what that particular figurine has sold for recently, and that will give you an even more accurate perceived value.

Is there any way to get a replacement lamp shade?
Response From Trailmaster:
Not from us, I'm afraid. Your best bet is someplace like Home Depot or Lower, where there is a wide selection of lamp shades.

Does a portion of the proceeds go to a Native American charity?
Response From Trailmaster:
The Trail began as a philanthropic public art project that over the years has raised and donated close to a million dollars to a variety of non-pofit groups. We have also partnered with different charities on special projects. And each year we make a donation to worthy groups whose needs are immediate. This year, for example, we donated to a food bank, an animal rescue group, and a therapeutic horse riding center.

Hi. I was wondering if the 1E editions are worth more than 2E editions. I want to keep collecting painted ponies but not get side tracked into too many different collections. Your opinion would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Sincerely Lisa Pavia
Response From Trailmaster:
The 1E editions are generally more prized by serious collectors than figurines that are part of the Second Edition, and so they may prove to be worth more should you wish to resell.

What is consider blue ribbon?
Response From Trailmaster:
The Blue Ribbon Edition refers to figurines #1 through #12, and are available exclusively through the Official Trail of Painted Ponies Store.

I saw a Trail of Painted Ponies year of the horse advertised on ebay. On the bottom it has a number of 0352 / 5000. It also says limited edition. How is that different from the 1E, 2E etc...6pn1Gh
Response From Trailmaster:
The "Year of the Horse" you saw was part of a limited edition of 5000. Check the size. Editions that are numbered 1E and 2E editions refer to editions that are 10,000 in number.

I recently found a few (10?) of the Pony x mas ornaments ( small) in boxes (some damage to boxes but figures seem OK, they are unopened) from 2007. I am wondering what they are worth aprox and would I be better off trying to sell individualy or just as one set/ lot? I was thinking eBay but maybe someone on this site is interested in them??
Response From Trailmaster:
There is no guidebook with a set price on Painted Pony holiday ornaments. Your best bet is to post them individually on eBay and see what the interest is.

I have both the standard size and the larger size of War Pony. How many of the larger sized ponies are/were made?
Response From Trailmaster:
The last number at retirement for the large "War Pony" was 2E/2,721. That means 12,721 figurines were produced.

Hi, I just acquired "Citrus" today. So original and unique!! Just looking for a little history on this piece. Its signed by Gale?? and has #001 written on the bottom. So excited to have picked this up. Thanks for your help!!
Response From Trailmaster:
Sorry to disappoint you but The Trail has not produced a Painted Pony figurine titled "Citrus." Since it was signed and has #001 on the bottom, perhaps what you have is a one-of-a-kind Painted Pony that was painted by an artist on one of our Paint Your Own Pony kits.

I am new to The Trail of Painted Ponies. Can you please give me the background of the Medicine Horse? I always enjoy hearing about any symbolize or story with a piece.
Response From Trailmaster:
The life-size "Medicine Horse" was created by the Cherokee artist Mary Iron Eyes for the original Trail of Painted Ponies public art project. A gifted writer as well as painter, she wanted her Pony to stand not only as a work of art but an "expression of healing and support for those in need in our community." Adorned with a tribal sash made of leather, shells and beads, decorated with individual handprints of children from Taos, New Mexico, Mary worked overtime to complete this "vision and personal prayer" before passing to the other side in the summer of 2003, before it was crafted into a figurine. I considered Mary a personal friend.

Lori Cochran from West Virginia wrote on October 25, 2020:
What was the very first trail of painted pony that was ever painted?
Response From Trailmaster:
If you are including the public art project that began in 2001 and featured life-size Painted Ponies, it would be Robert Rivera's "Anasazi Spirit Horse," which he began painting over the Thanksgiving Holidays in the Albuquerque Airport. If you are asking about the Painted Pony figurines, it would be the Winter 2003 release which featured eight different figurines.
